It is tempting to talk about Mammoth Lake's history in terms of human development, because it was the Mammoth Mining Co. (1888-1889) which gave the now-thriving town it's name. But, the most dramatic event in local history was the eruption of the Long Valley Caldera, a volcanic event blowing more than 150 cubic miles of molten rock and ash out of Long Valley, 760,000 years ago. "Enough volcanic material was released to pave a 12-lane highway to the moon, ash has been found as far away as Nebraska and Kansas." The amazing surrounding landscape speaks eloquently of rich geology from ancient volcanos to active fumeroles. The Mamoth Lakes environment is a favorite area for field study by college and university field teams from across the country.

For those more inclined toward speed and adrenaline, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is unparalled as California's premiere Sierra Nevada resort for skiers and riders. With 3,100 vertical feet, 3,500 skiable acres and 400 inches of snow per year, the powder is plentiful and the season is long. Other winter adventure incudes snowmobile tours and cross country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sled rides.

A cause and effect of affluent tourism has been the wide range of successful events showcasing music, art and culture. Also easily found in Mammoth Lakes are fine dining, live music and flowing spirits. Since it's early days, Mammoth has been home to those who embrace a moveable lifestyle, from miners and packers, to snow seekers and mountaineers. Having lost none of it's backcountry appeal, the Mammoth economy depends on tourism. Yet, a more permanent, family-based population has evolved over last two decades as evidenced by the growth of schools and social support. With a year-round population of 7,093 (census 2000), the town can swell to more than 35,000. Summer is as popular as winter, with fishing as the perennial favorite, along with mountain biking camping and hiking. Click here for a complete list of adventures.
